FAQ - Parent Select Meeting

Here are some of the questions asked during the Parent Select Team meeting.

1 - How many practices a week are will there be for the December to February off-season practice?
From December to February there will be 2 - 3 optional practices per week at the LYB batting cages. Practices on an outdoor field may be scheduled depending on weather.

2 - How many games will there be during the regular season?
Select teams will play approximately a 40 game season, 12 regular season games and then about 2 tournaments per month. Success in the State tournament may extend the season and games.

3 - Are all games in general 1 hour radius of Portland or are they in farther reaches of Oregon.
We will try to have the weekly games as local as possible [Lake Oswego, Tigard, West Linn], league games can range from Salem, Portland, Sandy, Lakeridge, West Linn, Vancouver WA, Hillsboro, Newberg. Majority of tournaments will be in the Portland Metro area. Teams may choose to attend out of town tournaments, we have had teams travel to Bend and Medford for Memorial Day in the past among other places.

4 - Why is there only 1 Select team this year whereas there were 3 Westside JBO teams last year?
Last year there were only 2 competitive level teams for the 10u-12u JBO teams, Minor Federal and Junior Federal. In 2020 there will be an increase to 3 competitive teams for the 10u-12u age group with the 10u, 11u, and 12u Select teams. Teams at the American and National JBO levels are developmental teams and these players will be accommodated in the Majors and Minor AAA Cal Ripken levels. For families interested in playing more baseball, tournament teams will be offered to expand the season in May, June, and July beyond the regular season, depending on interest and coach availability.

5 - How many players will be on each select team?
Each Select team will have 12 players on the roster

6 - What are the innings limits for pitchers on the Select team?
Cal Ripken followsthe "Pitch Smart" Program. Click Here for more information.

7 - If your player is not chosen for the Select team, where can they play?
If your player isn't chosen for the 10U Select team they will still be able to play in AAA. If they are 11 or 12 and don't make the 12U or 11U Select team, they will still be able to play in Majors division which is a mix of the 11 and 12 year olds.

8 - Will JBO still be offered from April - July?
We will only be offering JBO at the Senior level [7th & 8th grade]

9 - When will the Select teams be announced?
We are looking at Nov 18th to announce the teams

10 - When will you have the exact schedule for the December - February optional practices?
We should have more info about this at the end of the tryouts

11 - What does the $1250 Select price include?
- Home and away uniforms , including jerseys, pants, socks, belt, and hats.
- Indoor facility rental fees , outdoor fields, insurance, league fees, tournament fees, baseballs, equipment, and umpire fees.
- Lincoln High School varsity coaches leading the teams in December, January, and February, with team coaches assisting the High School.

2020 Baseball Season Improvements

TO: Lincoln Youth Baseball families

REGARDING: 2020 Season

After receiving the feedback from the 2019 spring baseball season and reviewing the trend of dwindling HS freshman baseball players, the LYB organization has discussed and finalized some improvements for the upcoming 2020 baseball season. We believe these changes will help keep kids playing baseball longer and enhance the experience for each age group and type of player. Please see below table of changes for the upcoming season and review the additional page for further information on the changes. Download the PDF.

Email us if you have any questions regarding these changes

**Interlocking is defined as scheduled league games against other Leagues. We will play against teams in our league and potentially interlock with other local Cal Ripken Leagues, West Linn, Lakeridge, Newberg, etc. Scheduling will depend on number of teams at this level. Season will end first week of June.

Why are we making these league changes?

  • We want to provide an alternative to competitive JBO baseball at the minor and junior level.
  • We also want to provide a more flexible competitive landscape.
  • Other area league's are seeing success following this model and we have worked with Cal Ripken successfully in the past. The Cal Ripken league offers more flexible rosters when compared to JBO. This ultimately allows us to move players to an appropriate level of competition and allows families more flexibility in their other plans.
  • Our minor level AAA program will see more players come back from JBO and new playing opportunities in 2020. The players that played JBO in 2019 and do not make the 2020 10U Select team will still be organized into league teams and be playing tournaments by utilizing players from more than just their AAA team and still play 16 AAA games.

What are the Cal Ripken Select teams?

  • These teams would be filled with players at a competition level similar to JBO Federal. We're hoping to enhance federal level experience by adding the following items:
    • More tournaments and likely tournaments with nicer facilities.
    • We will leverage the local league (LYB league) kids who want to play competitive baseball for a weekend to allow us to play in more tournaments.
    • Practices would start January 1st and we will likely rent out indoor facilities. Additional training opportunities will have a cost associated with them. This overall cost will be much less than joining a club team.
    • More information on the select program will be coming in September, including evaluation time and place.

T-Ball level

  • One mid-week night game and one Saturday game. Approximately a 12 game season, which will begin in mid April.
  • No practices after first two weeks.
  • Teams can practice 45 minutes before games.

Many people don't realize the costs associated with providing affordable organized baseball and softball to kids in the Portland area. We partner with Portland Parks & Rec. (PPR), however, we still have to budget for ~$50,000 per year to maintain 10 school fields and 8 PPR fields.
